Silverstone Classic race report

Aug 25th, 2017

Silverstone classic welcomed a capacity grid of Formula Ford’s for what was the biggest and most prestigious race on this years calendar, the race everyone wanted to win!

Classic team Merlyn driver Geoff Underwood returned to action after missing Brands Hatch to join Michael O’Brien for the big race.

The action got underway for the Formula Ford's on Friday morning for there qualifying session, in the tricky damp conditions it was always going to be a challenge to put a good, clean lap together. Michael did just that perfectly as he stormed to yet another pole position, this time with his biggest margin of the year, 1.1 seconds ahead of his nearest competitor. Geoff came in feeling disappointed after the qualifying, having not put all of his best sectors together he fell out of position and would start the race 49th with lots of work to do!

Race one got underway on Saturday morning, Michael got off to a fantastic start, putting himself at the front of what was a lead group of 4 cars, he battled to stay ahead throughout and with 3 laps to go, finally break the slipstream to charge on and claim the win by just over 2 seconds! Geoff had a stunning race, moving up more than 20 positions during the 20 minute race to put himself firmly in the mid field of the grid and much more confident for race two.

Sunday saw us arrive to a rather damp track for race two, something that Michael was very much looking forward too after being the standout driver in the wet weather conditions this season. Michael had built up a big lead in the early laps, only for the safety car to be deployed and cut the gap back down to nothing. Once the race got going again, Michael stayed out of trouble, built the gap back up and went on to record a double win! Geoff had another good race, fighting the car though the damp conditions, Geoff would go on to finish a very respectable 26th position in what's being called one of the most competitive championships in the UK this season!

Our next stop is up at Croft this weekend (5/6 August) where Michael will be looking to build on the momentum and add to his win Tally this season!
