Formula 4 victory

Aug 8th, 2015

Michael O'Brien scored a brilliant first Formula 4 Victory in treacherous conditions at Rockingham Motor Speedway.

Michael O'Brien scored a very impressive first victory at Rockingham on Sunday 3rd May in Round 5 of the DUO BRDC Formula 4 Championship

Michael took a lights to flag victory from pole position in a race that was held in atrociously wet conditions, and was never headed thoughout the twenty minute duration of the event

Michael pulled out a lead of 2.5 seconds on the first lap alone as he went on to stretch his lead but halfway though the race the safety car was deployed, cutting his advantage to nothing, after a brilliant restart he went on  to open a lead again and take a commanding victory

Compared to his championship rivals Michael has very little car racing experience under his belt, and minimal testing time due to entering the championship very late on meant this was also only his first time on the new for 2015 Pirelli wet tyres!

The win at Rockingham combined with another top 10 finish in the opening race, and consistant points finishes at the first round mean Michael is sitting in 9th in the points with it all to play for coming into the next round of the championship

Michael commented after the race "It was an amazing race for us, I've never driven in such rainy conditions, and to have my first experience of driving this car in the wet with the pressure of starting from pole position was a bit daunting. However, once I got a good start and could see I was able to pull away from all my rivals, I knew all I needed to do was keep producing consistant laps, which is what I did. To take a lights to flag victory like this was a very special feeling."

The next race of the season is at Silverstone on the 30/31 of May, Michael is hoping for more success on his home circuit.
