Brilliant Brands weekend for Michael O’Brien

Jul 12th, 2017

Brands Hatch welcomed Historic Formula Ford for the fourth round of the 2017 championship in what promised to be a special race weekend as Formula Ford officially celebrated it’s 50th!

Classic Team Merlyn arrived at Brands Hatch on the Friday with a single car, with team driver Geoff Underwood having prior commitments it was down to Michael O’Brien to fly the flag for the team at this special meeting.

Qualifying got underway on Saturday morning in the now standard two group format with the quickest overall time deciding pole position. Michael got a fantastic lap in qualifying to secure yet another overall pole position, his third out of a possible four this year.

Race one followed on Saturday afternoon in warmer conditions. Michael drove a very smart race in what was a 5 car slipstreaming battle to clinch second place, just inches behind the first place car.

Race two was a similar story to race one, this time only 3 cars stayed in the lead breakaway, Michael again being one of them. With a handful of laps to go, Michael started to get himself into position to win the race, unfortunately it didn't go quite his way with the slipstreaming and he would come across the line to finish another very close second, this time just 0.4 behind the winner, Cameron Jackson.

With a double podium finish (the only driver to do so) and finishing ahead of his championship rivals in both races meant plenty of positives for Michael to take away from Brands Hatch.

Our next event is the 2017 Silverstone Classic, please come to show your support in what will be the biggest Formula Ford races seen in years!
