Pole position at Thruxton

Driving Speedsport's 'Blue' Merlyn MK20, Michael O'Brien qualified on pole position for the Historic Formula Ford race at Thruxton this Easter and after two fairly eventful races finished on the podium in third position in both events. These results leave him second in the 2014 HFF Championship, with the next round to take place at Silverstone on May 17th.

Also competing in the Classic Racing car event, open to a variety of racing cars from pre 1971, Michael embarrassed his more powerful rivals in tricky wet conditions by grabbing pole position overall, and then went on to score his first race victory in dominant fashion.

The historic Formula Ford racing season got underway at Donington on April 6th. and both Speedsport prepared Merlyns were in action. Team mate Josh West qualified third, and after an eventful race finished a spirited fifth overall. Michael also competed in the 'Classic Racing Car' event, qualifying second overall and finishing fifth against much more powerful opposition, easily winning the HFF class in the process.

Draghicescu and O'Brien star at Walter Hayes

Mark Draghicescu drove superbly in the Historic Final at the Walter Hayes Trophy, only narrowly missing out on a debut victory. Having finished a stunning eight in his heat against much more modern machinery, Mark was placed third on the grid for the Historic Final.

A titanic four way lead battle featuring Mark, Tarling [in much more 'modern' 1980 Van Diemen], HFF Champion Sam Mitchell and HFF race winner David Wild, saw Draghicescu lead over the line on many laps, but he fell to fourth on the final lap finishing a scant 0.7sec behind the race winner in what was very accurately described as the best race of the whole meeting.

Meanwhile young Michael O'Brien contested the HSCC single seater race for which both qualifying and the race itself were held in extremely wet conditions. Easily dominating the HFF class, Michael was contesting a podium position with cars such as a F2 Chevron, and finished a very creditable four overall and first in class.

Both Merlyns are available for Winter testing and racing next season, so please call us for further info.
